Beginners Course

Your Journey Begins Here

Beginning Yoga Can Feel Like A Big Step

Many people have thought about trying yoga for years but have never quite found the confidence to begin. Some believe they're not flexible enough. Others think they're too old, not fit enough, or that they'll feel out of place walking into their first class.

These are some of the most common concerns beginners have, and fortunately none of them need to stand in the way.

Established in Melbourne 2001, Gay Men's Yoga has been welcoming beginners into the practice of traditional Raja Yoga for over 25 years. Throughout that time, hundreds of men have discovered that yoga isn't about being flexible or performing difficult postures. It's about understanding the body, calming the mind and developing a practice that can support health and wellbeing throughout life.

Learning takes place in a relaxed, welcoming and supportive environment where questions are encouraged and progress happens at an individual pace.

FOUR WAYS TO BEGIN

Everybody begins yoga differently.

Some people enjoy learning privately before joining a group. Others prefer additional one-to-one tuition, while many appreciate beginning with a relaxing Yoga Massage. For those unable to attend the Melbourne studio, live online classes provide the same personalised guidance from anywhere in Australia or the world.

There is no right or wrong choice.

WHY LEARN YOGA THIS WAY?

There are many different styles of yoga and many excellent teachers throughout the world.

The purpose of the Beginners Course isn't simply to teach yoga postures. It's to provide a solid foundation in traditional Raja Yoga, helping men understand not only what they are doing, but why they are doing it.

Rather than simply following a sequence of movements, men learn the principles that underpin an authentic yoga practice—how to move safely, breathe correctly, and understand the purpose behind each posture.

These foundations remain valuable throughout life. Whether continuing at Gay Men's Yoga, attending another studio, exploring a different style, travelling overseas or simply practising at home, the principles remain the same.

A Beginners Course should do more than prepare someone for the next class.

It should provide the understanding, confidence and foundations for a lifetime of yoga.

WHAT WILL BE LEARNED?

The Beginners Course introduces the essential foundations of traditional Raja Yoga, including:

• Fundamental Yoga Postures (Asana)

• Breathing Techniques (Pranayama)

• Relaxation

• Meditation

• Safe Stretching

• Correct Alignment

• Balance and Posture

• Body Awareness

Many men soon discover that yoga is far more than physical exercise. It is a complete practice that supports physical health, mental wellbeing and everyday life.

YOUR FIRST VISIT

The first session begins with a relaxed conversation about previous yoga experience, any injuries or health concerns, and what each man hopes to gain from yoga.

From there, the practice begins gently and progresses at a comfortable pace.

There is no pressure to perform, no competition and no expectation to know anything before arriving.

Every man learns differently.

Yoga simply meets each person where they are.

THERE'S NO NEED TO...

  • Be Flexible

  • Be Fit

  • Know Any Yoga Postures

  • Wear Expensive Yoga Clothing

  • Have Previous Yoga Experience

  • Compare Yourself With Anyone Else

Simply arrive with an open mind and a willingness to begin.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE COURSE?

Many men continue into weekly group classes.

Others enjoy ongoing private tuition, while some combine both.

There is no right or wrong pathway.

The Beginners Course provides the confidence and foundations to continue enjoying yoga—whether at Gay Men's Yoga, another studio, while travelling or through a personal home practice.

READY TO BEGIN?

Every yoga journey starts with a single step.

Whether that first step is taken through private tuition, group classes, massage or online learning, the goal remains the same—to provide the understanding, confidence and foundations for a lifetime of yoga.

The hope is that wherever your yoga journey leads in the years ahead, these foundations remain with you, allowing yoga to become a lifelong source of strength, balance and wellbeing.

Begin Well. Learn Well. Enjoy Yoga For Life.
